Online TRT and ED Clinics: 10 Things to Check Before You Pay
Online TRT and ED clinics publish very different amounts of information before you pay. Below are 10 checks, each with what Hims, Hone Health, Male Excel, Quad by MEDVi and Taurus Meds published when we read their pages on September 16, 2026. "Not published" means we looked and did not find it.

Who prescribes, and under which license
Why it matters: At all five clinics, care comes from a separate medical group. HHS says clinicians must “be licensed or legally permitted to practice in the state where the patient is located”; for testosterone, DEA rules also apply (see our federal prescribing rules guide).
How to check: Find the medical group in the terms or consent form, then check your prescriber’s license with your state’s licensing board.

Lab tests before and during treatment
Why it matters: FDA-approved testosterone labeling tells prescribers to confirm low testosterone with blood tests “measured in the morning on at least two separate days” and describes checks during treatment.
How to check: Ask which lab runs the tests, what each costs and how often retesting is due.

FDA-approved generic or compounded
Why it matters: FDA says: “Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved. This means that FDA does not verify the safety, effectiveness or quality of compounded drugs before they are marketed.”
How to check: Ask for the product name, each ingredient’s strength and whether it is compounded. FDA’s Orange Book lists drug products “approved on the basis of safety and effectiveness.”

Which pharmacy fills the prescription
Why it matters: FDA warns that people buying compounded drugs online “may not know the identity of the compounder that produced the drug.”
How to check: Ask which pharmacy fills your order and whether it is a 503A pharmacy or a 503B outsourcing facility; our 503A vs 503B guide explains the difference.

The full cost: membership, tests, medication and shipping
Why it matters: A headline price can omit a required membership, tests or shipping, and one charge may cover several months.

How to check: Find the list before starting an intake; if there is none, ask support in writing.

Cancellation deadlines and refunds
Why it matters: These terms decide what you pay if a clinician declines you, if you stop, or if an order has shipped.
How to check: Find each of those rules and the cancellation deadline, and save a copy.

Arbitration clauses and opt-outs
Why it matters: All five companies’ terms send disputes to arbitration. Hone’s terms state the effect plainly: “YOU AGREE TO GIVE UP YOUR RIGHT TO GO TO COURT INCLUDING IN A CLASS ACTION PROCEEDING.”
How to check: Search the terms for “opt out,” note the deadline and method, and act in writing.

Marketing claims, read against the fine print
Why it matters: Onset times, outcome figures and “no hidden fees” lines are company statements, not findings.
How to check: Check each claim against the pricing page and the terms.

Complaint records and regulatory actions
Why it matters: Complaint themes and regulatory actions tell you more than a headline rating.
How to check: Read BBB complaint categories and recent one-star reviews, and search FDA warning letters and FTC press releases for the company’s legal name.

Taurus Meds and MEDVi both name OpenLoop Health as a clinical partner. HIPAA Journal, a third-party publication, reported a January 2026 OpenLoop breach affecting up to 716,000 people; we did not confirm that figure.

Frequently asked questions
How can I tell whether an online TRT or ED clinic is legitimate?
Check the medical group and your prescriber’s state license first, then the pharmacy, lab plan, refund terms and complaint record. No single badge settles it.
Are compounded ED medications FDA-approved?
No. FDA does not verify the safety, effectiveness or quality of compounded drugs before they are marketed. Taurus Meds and Hims say their compounded products are not FDA-approved; the Quad page does not, but a July 2026 MEDVi release does.
Which of these clinics publish a state list?
Hone Health publishes a state table, and Male Excel lists the states it excludes. Hims gives no list, MEDVi shares its list through customer service, and Taurus Meds publishes none.
Will I get a refund if a clinician declines to treat me?
MEDVi promises a full refund on medical disqualification, and Hone’s pricing disclaimer refunds the initial membership fee. We found no such rule for ED or testosterone patients at Hims or Taurus Meds, and Male Excel’s terms say all sales are final.
Do these clinics take insurance?
Male Excel and Hone Health say they do not. Hims says insurance is not required and that it does not take FSA or HSA plans for testosterone care. The Quad and Taurus pages we read do not address insurance.
